Description

This variant of the 138 Market Street Philadelphia token differs from HT-419 in edge type, metal, or die state. Like its companion piece, it dates to 1841–43 and represents the dry goods business operating at the same address previously occupied by Spering, Mixsell & Innes (HT-418). The continuation of token issuance from this address across multiple years indicates a sustained commercial operation. The Market Street dry goods district in Philadelphia during the early 1840s was gradually recovering from the devastating effects of the Panic of 1837. Many firms that had failed during the crisis were replaced by new partnerships, and the survivors emerged with strengthened positions in the wholesale trade. The 138 Market Street location, centrally positioned in this commercial corridor, would have been among the more desirable retail addresses in the city. Sub-varieties within the Hard Times token series often reflect practical production decisions—a merchant might order tokens in different metals (copper, brass, or German silver) for different purposes, or a token maker might use slightly different dies as the original dies wore out over years of use.
