Description

This 1840-1844 token is a variant in the Doremus, Suydam & Nixon dry goods series from New York City. The later date range (compared to the 1832-1838 core issues) indicates the firm maintained its token advertising program well beyond the Hard Times crisis period, continuing to distribute tokens as advertising media even after the coin shortage had subsided and the economy had begun to recover. The longevity of Doremus, Suydam & Nixon's business and advertising program through the Hard Times period and beyond testifies to the firm's commercial strength. While many businesses failed during the Panic of 1837, established wholesale importers with strong European connections and deep capital reserves often weathered the storm. The firm's continued production of advertising tokens during the early 1840s indicates sustained confidence in their business and the token medium's effectiveness. Doremus, Suydam & Nixon's extended token program — spanning from the early 1830s through the mid-1840s — makes it one of the longest-running merchant token series in the Hard Times catalog.
