Description

This variant of the Henderson & Gaines token differs from HT-119 in edge type, metal, or die state. The firm imported and sold china, glass, and earthenware from their shop at 14 Canal Street, New Orleans, serving the domestic needs of the city's affluent households with a comprehensive selection of tableware, decorative items, and lighting fixtures. New Orleans in the late 1830s and early 1840s was unique among American cities for its cosmopolitan consumer culture. The city's wealthy planter families maintained elaborate households requiring constant replenishment of fine china, glassware, and silver-plated tableware. French, English, and Chinese porcelain was in particular demand, and importers like Henderson & Gaines served as the conduit between European and Asian manufacturers and Louisiana's plantation aristocracy. The 1838–42 date range places this token variant at the height of the Hard Times in New Orleans, when the collapse of cotton prices and the resulting wave of planter bankruptcies would have severely impacted luxury goods dealers. The firm's survival through this period indicates careful management and a shift toward more affordable earthenware and Britannia metal goods as their wealthy customers retrenched.
