Coin Details
Description
This 1838-1839 copper Patterson Bros. token is a die variety from the Buffalo, New York hardware firm. Distinguished from HT-212 by specific die characteristics, this variety documents the firm's continued investment in token advertising during the late Hard Times period. By 1838-1839, the Panic of 1837 had already contracted Buffalo's economy, but the city's strategic position ensured continued commercial activity even during the downturn. The hardware trade in Buffalo served multiple markets simultaneously — local construction and manufacturing, the outfitting of westward migrants, and the supply of Great Lakes shipping operations. Each of these markets required specialized hardware products, from carpenter's tools and building nails to marine fittings and agricultural implements. The Patterson brothers' business encompassed this full range of hardware merchandise. Buffalo's location at the eastern end of Lake Erie and the western end of the Erie Canal made it a natural distribution center for hardware manufactured in the eastern states. Patterson Bros. operated as both retailers and wholesalers, receiving hardware shipments via the canal and redistributing them to communities throughout western New York and the lake shore regions.
