(1837) Token HT-61C, Mint Drops
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This variety of the 1837 Mint Drop / Bentonian Currency token is struck in an unrecorded composition, making it one of the more enigmatic pieces in the subseries. The exact alloy has not been conclusively identified in published references, and the piece may represent an experimental striking, a contemporary production on non-standard planchet stock, or a variant whose composition defies easy classification. The Mint Drop design appears on several Hard Times Token varieties (HT-61 through HT-64), each representing a distinct die combination. The reverse inscription "BENTONIAN CURRENCY / MINT / DROP" is arranged within a wreath, with the date and additional text varying among varieties. The Liberty head obverse follows the general pattern of the series, with details of the portrait, stars, and date providing the primary diagnostic distinctions. Varieties with undocumented compositions are particularly interesting to advanced collectors because they raise questions about the production practices of private token manufacturers. Were these pieces deliberately struck on unusual planchets to test new alloys? Were they accidental products of mixed scrap metal? Or do they represent later restrikes on different metal stock? The answers to these questions remain subjects of ongoing numismatic research.
