(1837) Token HT-464A, Hard Times Counterstamp "Yk" Token
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1837 Hard Times Token bears a "Yk" counterstamp, adding a layer of commercial marking to what is a political or satirical token. The "Yk" counterstamp may represent a merchant's initials, an abbreviation for "York" (as in New York), or an identifying mark whose meaning has been lost to history. Counterstamped Hard Times tokens represent the intersection of two numismatic traditions: the production of political and merchant tokens, and the practice of applying merchant marks to circulating pieces. When a merchant counterstamped a Hard Times token rather than a regular coin, they were adding their advertising message to a piece that already carried political or commercial content, creating a palimpsest of commercial and political expression. The "Yk" counterstamp is among the more enigmatic markings in the Hard Times series. Without a confirmed attribution, the stamp could represent any of dozens of merchants or businesses whose names or locations contained these letters. The mystery of unattributed counterstamps adds an element of detective work to Hard Times token collecting.
