(1837) Token HT-33A, Illustrious Predecessor
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This silver variety of the 1837 Illustrious Predecessor token was struck as a premium presentation piece. The silver composition elevates this token from everyday circulation piece to commemorative medal, and the slightly larger 28.5mm diameter indicates the use of a silver planchet cut to slightly different specifications than the standard copper blanks. Silver Hard Times Tokens were produced in very small quantities for collectors, political operatives, and prominent party members. The satirical imagery of the Illustrious Predecessor design — jackass and tortoise — would have been particularly appreciated in silver by ardent Whigs who delighted in mocking Van Buren's presidency and his economic policies. The irony of striking a token critical of Democratic monetary policy in silver, the hard currency that Jacksonians championed, added an additional layer of political humor. Silver Illustrious Predecessor tokens are among the most sought-after pieces in the Hard Times Token series. Their combination of political significance, iconic design, and extreme rarity makes them high-profile auction items when they appear on the market. Most surviving examples show careful preservation consistent with deliberate collecting from the time of issue.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. Silver strikings of the Illustrious Predecessor are extremely scarce. Fewer than 10-15 examples survive.
