Description

This 1837 Illustrious Predecessor token completes the main copper trio of the design (HT-31, HT-32, HT-33). Each represents a distinct die combination, identifiable by differences in the rendering of the running jackass and the reverse tortoise design. HT-33 is distinguished from its companions by specific die characteristics including the position of design elements relative to border lettering. The Illustrious Predecessor series occupies a central place in the study of American political satire through material culture. The tokens demonstrate how visual imagery was used to communicate complex political arguments to a broad audience, including many citizens with limited literacy. The running jackass and burdened tortoise conveyed their messages instantly and universally — no reading was required to understand the mockery of Van Buren as Jackson's slavish follower and his economic policies as hopelessly slow and burdensome. The copper composition and cent-like dimensions ensured these tokens reached the widest possible audience through daily commerce. Every time a customer received an Illustrious Predecessor token in change, they encountered Whig propaganda; every time they spent it, they passed that propaganda along. This viral quality made political tokens among the most effective mass communication tools of their era.

Rarity Notes
