Description
This gilt copper Smith's Clock Establishment token combines the standard clock face obverse with a gilt surface treatment that gives the piece a golden appearance. The gilt finish was achieved by applying a thin layer of gold or gold-colored lacquer to the copper planchet, either before or after striking. Gilt tokens served as premium or presentation pieces, distinguished from the ordinary copper issues by their attractive golden color. The gilt treatment would have made this token stand out among the copper cents and copper tokens in everyday circulation, potentially increasing its effectiveness as an advertising medium. A golden token bearing the clock face and "TIME IS MONEY" motto would catch the eye and prompt the recipient to examine it more closely, thereby absorbing the advertising message for Smith's Clock Establishment. Gilt copper tokens from the Hard Times era are generally scarcer than their plain copper counterparts, as the gilding process added cost and complexity to production. Many surviving examples show wear to the gilt surface, with the copper substrate visible at high points, creating a distinctive two-toned appearance that collectors find attractive.
