Description

This Feuchtwanger three-cent token is an eagle variety with prooflike striking, showing the eagle in flight above a rock on the obverse. The superior surface quality of prooflike specimens indicates these were among the first strikes from fresh dies or were produced with special care, as presentation pieces or samples intended to impress potential investors and government officials. Feuchtwanger's campaign to replace copper coinage with his nickel-silver alloy was remarkably persistent. Despite Congress's rejection of his initial 1837 petition, he continued producing and distributing tokens for decades, maintaining his argument that the American monetary system would benefit from adopting a silver-colored base metal alloy. His vision was ultimately vindicated—not by the adoption of his specific formula, but by the U.S. Mint's eventual embrace of copper-nickel alloys starting with the Flying Eagle cent in 1857 and the Shield nickel in 1866. The prooflike finish on this variety makes it particularly attractive to collectors. The mirror-like fields contrast sharply with the frosted design elements, creating a cameo effect that enhances the visual impact of the eagle design and the reverse wreath and lettering.
