(1837) Token HT-252, New York NY
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1837 copper token is a variety in the Hallock & Bates series from New York City. Hallock & Bates (and the later partnership Hallock, Dolson & Bates, HT-277) operated as merchants in Manhattan's commercial district during the Hard Times period. The firm produced tokens in multiple varieties and compositions (copper and brass), indicating a sustained advertising campaign that spanned the peak years of the Hard Times Token era. The transition from "Hallock & Bates" to "Hallock, Dolson & Bates" visible across the token series documents a common pattern in antebellum business — the admission of a new partner into an established firm. The addition of Dolson to the partnership in the late 1830s brought additional capital or expertise to the business during a period when commercial conditions were challenging and additional resources could mean the difference between survival and failure. New York City's merchant token issuers operated in the most competitive commercial environment in antebellum America. The concentration of wholesale and retail businesses in lower Manhattan meant that tokens from dozens of different merchants circulated simultaneously, creating a crowded advertising landscape in which each firm competed for customer attention.
