Description

This 1837 copper Liberty / Not One Cent token is among the final numbered varieties in the E PLURIBUS UNUM subgroup. The design follows the established formula: Liberty head left with E PLURIBUS UNUM and date on the obverse, "NOT ONE CENT" within wreath and "MILLIONS FOR DEFENCE NOT ONE CENT FOR TRIBUTE" around the border on the reverse. The Liberty/Not One Cent subseries (HT-35 through HT-52) represents the apex of private token production during the Hard Times era in terms of both volume and political influence. No other single design type was produced in as many die varieties or achieved as wide a circulation, making these tokens the defining artifacts of the period's monetary emergency. Their impact extended beyond immediate commerce and politics: they established the precedent that private token coinage could fill gaps in the official money supply, a precedent that would shape American monetary policy debates for decades. The comprehensive cataloging of these varieties by generations of numismatic researchers has created a rich body of literature that documents not only the tokens themselves but the social, economic, and political context in which they were created and used. Each die variety is a data point in this larger historical narrative, contributing to our understanding of how Americans responded to financial crisis through both political action and practical adaptation.
