Description

This Houck's Panacea counterstamp on a Capped Bust quarter (25 cents) represents one of the smaller American-denomination host coins used by Dr. Jacob Houck in his advertising campaign. The quarter dollar, at approximately 27mm diameter, provided sufficient space for the counterstamp while being a commonly circulated denomination in Baltimore's retail commerce. The use of quarter dollars alongside the more commonly encountered half dollar hosts indicates that Houck counterstamped coins across a range of denominations, potentially processing whatever silver coins were available at any given time. Quarter dollars would have been particularly effective advertising vehicles in retail settings where they changed hands frequently in everyday purchases of food, drink, and household necessities. Houck's patent medicine business operated from Baltimore throughout the 1830s and into the 1840s, surviving the economic turmoil of the Panic of 1837 that destroyed many conventional businesses. Patent medicine sellers were often more resilient during economic downturns than other merchants, as illness and anxiety about health actually increased during periods of economic stress, driving demand for nostrums and cure-alls that promised relief from both physical and psychological ailments.

Rarity Notes
