Description
This 1836 copper Squire & Merritt token variety is one of the later die combinations in the series. The consistent beehive-and-implements obverse design across all varieties maintained brand recognition among the South Street maritime community, while die-specific variations created the collectible distinctions that interest modern numismatists. By the mid-1830s, dozens of New York merchants had issued their own tokens, creating a competitive advertising environment. Along South Street and the adjacent waterfront blocks, multiple chandlery and maritime supply firms competed for the same customers. Tokens bearing the Squire & Merritt name served as constant reminders of their location at 175 South Street, distinguishing them from rivals in a business where convenience and proximity to the docks mattered greatly. The ship chandlery business proved relatively resilient during the Hard Times period compared to luxury trades, as vessels continued to require maintenance and supply regardless of economic conditions. Ships at sea could not defer rope replacement or rigging repairs, and vessels preparing for voyages had to be fully provisioned. This built-in demand helped maritime suppliers like Squire & Merritt weather the economic downturn better than many other merchants.
