(1836) Copper Token HT-321, Squire & Merritt NY
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1836 copper Squire & Merritt token variety continues the firm's extensive token series with a distinct die pairing from HT-319. Like all Squire & Merritt tokens, it advertises the ship chandlery and rope-making business at 175 South Street and served as a functional cent substitute in waterfront commerce. South Street in the 1830s was described as a forest of masts, with packet ships, coastal traders, and vessels from around the world tied up at the East River piers. The concentration of maritime businesses along this stretch — chandlers, sailmakers, riggers, coopers, and provisioners — created a self-contained commercial ecosystem. Squire & Merritt competed with other chandlery firms for the business of ship captains and agents who walked the street comparing prices and quality. The tokens, produced in 1836, were issued in the final year before the Panic of 1837. New York's maritime trade was among the first sectors to feel the economic contraction, as credit tightened and trade volumes fell. The firm's substantial investment in multiple token die varieties indicates confidence in business prospects that would soon be tested by the worst economic crisis the young nation had faced.
