(1835) Token HT-365, Troy NY
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1835 copper token from Troy, New York is a general-attribution piece that may represent a generic Troy cent-substitute or an unattributed merchant issue. The proliferation of Troy-attributed tokens without specific merchant names indicates that some were produced as general-purpose cent substitutes for the Troy commercial community, while others carried merchant inscriptions now lost to die wear or incomplete cataloging. Troy produced one of the densest concentrations of Hard Times Token varieties outside New York City, with the city's manufacturing capabilities and commercial culture encouraging widespread token adoption. Local die sinkers and press operators could produce tokens efficiently for any Troy merchant who requested them, and the resulting tokens circulated throughout the upper Hudson Valley's commercial network. The token's standard copper format and 28mm diameter ensured interchangeability with U.S. large cents, maximizing its utility as both circulating currency and advertising medium.
