Description
This 1835 copper N. Starbuck & Son token is another variety in the Troy, New York machine shop series. Like other Starbuck issues, it advertises the firm's turning, boring, and screw-manufacturing services while incorporating die-specific details that distinguish it from HT-366 and HT-368. The consistent copper composition across the standard Starbuck varieties reflects a straightforward production program. Machine shops like Starbuck's required substantial capital investment in lathes, boring bars, and other precision equipment, along with the skilled labor to operate them. The ability to produce mill screws — large threaded components that could be several feet long and several inches in diameter — demanded both specialized machinery and experienced craftsmen who understood the metallurgy and geometry of heavy-duty threaded fasteners. Troy's industrial concentration created natural synergies among its machine shops, foundries, and manufacturing firms. The Starbuck shop could source cast iron blanks from local foundries, machine them to specification, and deliver finished components to mills and processing plants along the river and canal system — a complete local supply chain that gave Troy manufacturers a competitive advantage over more isolated operations.
