Description

This token from the New York & Harlem Railroad Company depicts a horse-drawn rail car on the obverse, representing one of the earliest railroad operations in the United States. The New York & Harlem Railroad, chartered in 1831, began service on November 26, 1832, running horse-drawn cars along Fourth Avenue from Prince Street to the Harlem River — the first street railroad in New York City and one of the first in the world. The token's obverse design showing a horse pulling a rail car captures the transitional technology of early American railroads, which frequently used horse power before the adoption of steam locomotives. The NY & Harlem initially operated horse-drawn service within the built-up area of Manhattan, with steam locomotives used only on the northern portions of the route beyond the city limits. This dual-power arrangement continued for years, as city ordinances restricted the use of steam locomotives on crowded urban streets. The New York & Harlem Railroad token is among the earliest American transportation tokens, predating the widespread adoption of specialized fare tokens by transit companies. Whether it served as an actual fare medium or purely as a promotional piece remains debated, but its historical significance as a document of early American railroading is undeniable.

Rarity Notes
