Description
This variant of the J. Hall, Walker & Walton hardware and ship chandlery token differs from HT-121 in die state, edge type, or metallic composition. The firm occupied No. 17 New Levee in New Orleans, where they supplied the maritime trade with hardware, cutlery, firearms, iron goods, and millstones. New Orleans in 1834 was the commercial gateway to the American interior, handling more commerce by value than any other American port except New York. The Mississippi River system funneled the agricultural production of the entire western United States through New Orleans, and the city's waterfront was lined with chandleries, warehouses, and commission houses serving the vast fleet of steamboats, flatboats, and ocean-going vessels that converged on the port. Ship chandlery was among the most profitable and essential waterfront businesses. A chandlery stocked everything needed to outfit and maintain a vessel—from rope and canvas to provisions, navigation instruments, and the hardware that kept wooden ships seaworthy. Hall, Walker & Walton's extensive inventory, detailed on their token's reverse, shows they offered a comprehensive selection serving both maritime and inland agricultural customers.
