Description
This 1834 silver medal at 43mm honors Edwin Forrest, the most famous American actor of the nineteenth century and the first American-born theatrical star to achieve international fame. Forrest's powerful performances in Shakespearean roles made him the dominant figure on the American stage. His rivalry with English actor William Charles Macready culminated in the Astor Place Riot of 1849 in New York, in which at least 22 people were killed. This silver medal was produced during the height of Forrest's early career. The 43mm silver format indicates a premium commemorative. The secondary market for American medals has become increasingly sophisticated, with specialized auction houses, dealer networks, and online platforms connecting buyers and sellers across a global collector community. Theatrical medals from this period document the emerging American entertainment industry and celebrity culture.
