Description
This 1834 copper S.B. Schenck token is a third die variety in the series, completing a trio (HT-157, HT-160, HT-167) that represents one of the more extensively documented Attleboro merchant token programs. Three distinct die combinations for a single small manufacturer indicates either high production volume requiring die replacements, or deliberate production of variant issues — for different distribution channels or customer groups. The consistent 1834 date across all Schenck varieties indicates these were produced in a concentrated period rather than spread over multiple years. A single production campaign using multiple die pairs would have been an efficient use of press time, allowing the manufacturer to build up inventory for distribution while the press was set up for token-sized planchets rather than the firm's regular products. The Schenck tokens, together with the Robinson, Richards, and other Attleboro issues, form a cohesive group that collectors often pursue as a unit. The "Attleboro group" represents one of the most interesting regional concentrations in the Hard Times Token series, documenting a manufacturing community that would grow to dominate American jewelry production for the next century and a half.
