(1834-40) Token HT-133, Baltimore MD
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This Baltimore token is part of the sequential HT-132 through HT-134 group, sharing the same city attribution and date range. The three tokens may represent different die varieties or edge types from a single merchant, or they may document separate Baltimore businesses whose tokens were cataloged consecutively due to their similar characteristics. Baltimore's position as the third-largest American city in the 1830s made it a significant center of token production during the Hard Times. The city's merchants faced the same coin shortage that afflicted New York and Philadelphia, but Baltimore's smaller population and more concentrated commercial district meant that tokens could circulate more efficiently among a community where merchants and customers knew each other personally. The Chesapeake Bay region's agricultural economy—centered on tobacco, wheat, and corn—gave Baltimore's commerce a different character from the textile-focused trade of New England or the financial services of New York. Baltimore's Hard Times tokens reflect this regional commercial identity, documenting merchants who served the needs of farmers, ship captains, and the growing industrial workforce.
