(1834-37) Brass Token HT-333A, Suydam & Boyd NY
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This brass Suydam & Boyd token variety adds the brass composition to the firm's token offerings alongside the standard copper issues. The brass composition, with its golden color, distinguished this piece from the copper tokens in circulation and was produced in smaller quantities for special distribution or promotional purposes. The use of brass for this variety connects Suydam & Boyd to the broader tradition of multi-metal token production that characterized the more sophisticated Hard Times Token programs. Like Day, Newell & Day and other firms that produced tokens in multiple compositions, Suydam & Boyd recognized that material variety extended the appeal and collectibility of their token offerings. Suydam & Boyd's business at 187 Pearl Street placed them among the merchants most directly affected by the Panic of 1837. Pearl Street firms, heavily involved in importing and wholesaling, were exposed to the credit disruptions and trade contractions that characterized the crisis. Many Pearl Street businesses failed during the Hard Times period, and the survival of their tokens serves as the primary documentary evidence of their existence.
