Description

This variant of the 1834–35 New York City token continues the series of pre-panic merchant pieces documenting commercial activity during the speculative boom that preceded the Hard Times crisis. The different HT number from HT-255 indicates either a different merchant or a significantly different die combination. New York merchants in 1834–35 were operating in an environment of expanding credit and rising prices that encouraged risk-taking and investment. The commercial optimism of this period is reflected in the tokens themselves, which were produced as advertising accessories for thriving businesses rather than as desperate responses to monetary scarcity. The historical irony of pre-panic tokens is that their issuers could not have known that within a few years, their advertising pieces would be pressed into service as emergency money during the worst economic crisis the young nation had experienced. This transformation from novelty to necessity makes the early-dated Hard Times tokens among the most historically evocative pieces in the series.
