Coin Details
Description
This token advertises Bailly, Ward & Co., importers of perfumery, engravings, stationery, and jewellery at No. 41 Maiden Lane, New York. The obverse and reverse are both text-only designs identifying the firm, address, and merchandise categories. The import house dealt in luxury goods that served New York's growing affluent class. Maiden Lane was one of the most prestigious retail addresses in lower Manhattan, known for its concentration of jewelers, watchmakers, and luxury goods dealers. The street's association with fine merchandise dates to the early colonial period, and by the 1830s it had become New York's equivalent of London's Bond Street. Bailly, Ward & Co.'s inventory—perfumes, fine art engravings, quality writing papers, and jewelry—placed them firmly in the luxury trade. The French-sounding "Bailly" name indicates one partner was of French origin or maintained French commercial connections, which would have been advantageous for importing Parisian perfumery and fashion accessories. The combination of perfumery with engravings and stationery indicates a shop where customers could browse for gifts and personal luxury items—a precursor to the modern department store concept that would emerge later in the century.
