(1832-40) Token HT-414E, Philadelphia, W.D. Rapp PA
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This counterstamp by W.D. Rapp of Philadelphia was applied to a circulating coin, creating an advertising piece for Rapp's business establishment. The W.D. Rapp counterstamp series encompasses multiple varieties across different host coins, with the "E" suffix indicating this particular host coin variety. Rapp operated in Philadelphia during the 1832–1840 period, placing his business activity squarely within the Hard Times era. Philadelphia's merchant counterstamp tradition was extensive, with dozens of businesses applying their stamps to circulating coins as an inexpensive advertising medium. Unlike custom-struck tokens that required commissioning dies and paying a manufacturer, counterstamps needed only a simple punch that could be applied by the merchant himself using basic tools. This made counterstamping accessible even to small businesses that could not afford the investment in custom token production. The multiple varieties in the Rapp counterstamp series document the range of coins passing through his business over an eight-year period. Each different host coin—varying in denomination, date, and national origin—represents a separate transaction and a separate moment in the commercial life of antebellum Philadelphia.
