(1832-33) Silvered Copper Token HT-342A, Wright & Bale NY
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This silvered copper variety of the Wright & Bale engraving firm token features the same accomplished Benjamin Franklin portrait as HT-341 but with a silvered surface treatment that gives the piece a bright, metallic appearance. The silvering was applied to the copper planchet by immersion in a silver solution or by mechanical application of silver foil, producing a reflective surface that enhanced the visual impact of the finely engraved Franklin portrait. The choice to produce a silvered version of the Franklin token was motivated by Wright & Bale's desire to showcase their engraving skills to maximum effect. Silver-colored surfaces reveal fine engraving details more clearly than copper, and the silvered token would have served as an impressive "business card" when presented to potential clients seeking professional die-cutting, seal engraving, or medal production services. Wright & Bale were among the most skilled engravers in New York City during the 1830s, and their tokens demonstrate technical accomplishment that rivals contemporary products of the United States Mint. The Franklin portrait, with its careful attention to the great statesman's distinctive features, would have been recognized immediately by educated Americans familiar with the numerous painted and engraved portraits of Franklin that circulated widely in the early republic.
