This variant of the 1832–33 New York City token differs from HT-235 in die state, edge type, or metallic composition. The early dating places both varieties among the first generation of Hard Times merchant tokens, issued before the economic crisis that would make such pieces a necessity rather than a novelty. The existence of variants for an early-period token indicates either sustained production over multiple years or deliberate production in different metals.
