Description

This variant of the 1832–33 New York City token differs from HT-235 in die state, edge type, or metallic composition. The early dating places both varieties among the first generation of Hard Times merchant tokens, issued before the economic crisis that would make such pieces a necessity rather than a novelty. The existence of variants for an early-period token indicates either sustained production over multiple years or deliberate production in different metals. Pre-panic merchant tokens were luxury marketing items rather than economic necessities, and a merchant who invested in multiple varieties was making a significant commitment to token-based advertising. New York's position as America's commercial capital ensured that it would produce more Hard Times tokens than any other city. The 1832–33 issues represent the beginning of what would become the most extensive city-based token series in the catalog, ultimately encompassing hundreds of varieties from merchants across Manhattan's diverse commercial landscape.
