Description
This 1826 silver medal, cataloged as Julian PE-6, is an Edwards Facsimile honoring Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Carroll, a wealthy Maryland Catholic, signed the Declaration at considerable personal risk. He lived until 1832, outlasting all other signers. The "Edwards Facsimile" designation refers to a reproduction produced by the metalworker Edwards. The 1826 semicentennial date held special significance ā both Jefferson and Adams died on July 4 of that year, and Carroll, then 89, was the living connection to the founding moment. The artistic quality of American medals has evolved significantly over time, from the competent but sometimes crude products of early die cutters to the sophisticated sculptural compositions of modern medalists. Carroll's Catholic faith and enormous fortune made him one of the most remarkable Revolutionary figures.
Rarity Notes
