Description
This 1800 communion token from Charleston, South Carolina, cataloged as Burzinski-1411, documents the Presbyterian presence in one of the most important cities of the early American South. Charleston's Scottish and Scots-Irish Presbyterian community was influential in the city's commercial and civic life, with members active in trade, politics, and education. The 1800 date places this token at the turn of the nineteenth century, when Charleston was one of the wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities in America. Communion tokens from southern congregations are generally scarcer than their northern counterparts, as the Presbyterian population was more concentrated in the mid-Atlantic and frontier regions. This Charleston piece is therefore of particular interest to collectors of both communion tokens and southern numismatics.
Rarity Notes
