Description
This 1790 bronze medal, cataloged as Fuld-FR.M.NL.8, is an early Benjamin Franklin commemorative struck shortly after Franklin's death on April 17, 1790. Franklin's passing was mourned internationally — the French National Assembly declared three days of mourning, and the United States Congress wore mourning badges for a month. Medals commemorating Franklin proliferated immediately after his death, as engravers and medal producers sought to honor one of the most famous Americans in the world. The Fuld catalog for Franklin medals documents hundreds of distinct varieties spanning from the eighteenth century to the present. This 1790 bronze example represents the earliest generation of posthumous Franklin medals, struck while memories of the founding father were still vivid. Bronze was the most common composition for broadly distributed memorial medals of this period.
