1781 Lead Medal Betts-580
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1781 lead (Pb) medal (Betts-580) is a scarce metallic variant in the Revolutionary War series. Lead was occasionally used for trial strikes, proof impressions from new dies, or inexpensive reproductions of prestigious designs. The soft metal captures fine die detail effectively but is fragile and prone to surface deterioration over time. Betts-580 falls within the sequence of medals relating to the Caribbean theater and Anglo-Dutch War of the early 1780s. Lead medals from the eighteenth century are uncommon survivors, as the metal's softness makes the pieces vulnerable to damage, and its low intrinsic value gave owners little incentive to preserve them carefully. Collectors have pursued Betts medals since the nineteenth century, when numismatists first recognized these pieces as a coherent body of historical documentation worthy of systematic study and cataloging. Surviving examples in identifiable condition are genuinely scarce.
Rarity Notes
