Description

This 1781 bronze medal (Betts-595) struck from gunmetal dies depicts the Battle of Cowpens, one of the Comitia Americana series authorized by Congress. The gunmetal dies — made from a copper-tin-zinc cannon alloy — produce a subtly different impression from standard steel dies, with slightly softer detail edges. The reverse depicts the dramatic battle scene showing the moment of American victory over Tarleton's British force on January 17, 1781. European courts employed specialized medalists whose skills in miniature portraiture and allegorical composition made them essential figures in the propaganda machinery that supported colonial expansion. The Cowpens medal was one of the most important Congressional awards of the Revolution, recognizing a battle that fundamentally altered the strategic situation in the South and set the stage for the British surrender at Yorktown nine months later.

Rarity Notes

Gunmetal dies striking in bronze. Distinctive die material variant. Scarce.
