Description

This 1758 silver medal, Betts-410, commemorates the capture of Louisbourg in silver. The silver composition marks this as a higher-quality production intended for officers, officials, or wealthy collectors. The siege of Louisbourg lasted from June 8 to July 26, 1758, with British forces gradually advancing their siege lines under heavy fire from the French garrison. A key moment came when British sailors cut out and destroyed French warships in the harbor, eliminating the last hope of relief for the besieged fortress. The tradition of striking commemorative medals for New World events began with Spanish and Portuguese pieces in the sixteenth century, expanded through Dutch and French production in the seventeenth, and reached its peak with British issues during the colonial wars. The silver Louisbourg medal documents one of the most thoroughly planned and executed military operations of the colonial era.
