Description
This 1748 communion token from Conococheague, Pennsylvania, cataloged as Burzinski-1364, is among the earliest American communion tokens and documents the religious life of Scots-Irish Presbyterian settlers in the Cumberland Valley. Communion tokens were required for admission to the Lord's Supper in Presbyterian churches, distributed to worthy members by church elders after examination of their spiritual preparedness. The Conococheague settlement, located near present-day Chambersburg, was one of the earliest Scots-Irish communities on the Pennsylvania frontier. The Burzinski catalog is the standard reference for American communion tokens. This 1748 date places the token in the colonial period when frontier Presbyterian congregations maintained strict sacramental discipline, using metal tokens as a tangible gatekeeping mechanism for the most sacred Christian ordinance.
