Description

This 1716 silver medal (Betts-125var) features the J.C. Roettiers obverse, a different variant from the Du Vivier obverse version. Joseph-Charles Roettiers was a member of the distinguished Roettiers dynasty of engravers who served multiple European mints. The Roettiers family originated in Antwerp and became the most prolific medal-engraving dynasty in European history, with family members serving as chief engravers at the English, French, and Flemish mints simultaneously. This variant, with its Roettiers obverse portrait, represents the work of one of the finest engraving families of the era. The medallic record of colonial America provides evidence that standard historical accounts sometimes overlook, documenting diplomatic encounters, treaty negotiations, and military engagements through the perspectives of the participating European powers. Comparing the Du Vivier and Roettiers obverse variants reveals the different artistic approaches of two great engraving traditions working on the same subject.
